The Commodore’s Award - Renee Deerness

Renee Deerness is a highly deserving recipient of the Commodore’s Award, in recognition of her outstanding service and dedication to Drummoyne Sailing Club and the wider sailing community.

A long-time member of the club, Renee became even more involved through supporting her daughters, Alice and Sophie, in their sailing journey. Like many sailing parents, she put her hand up to help, and from that moment has become an integral part of the club and the Sabot community at both a state and national level.

Renee has been one of the driving forces behind the organisation and success of recent Sabot Championships, helping deliver events that have strengthened and grown the class across Australia. Her contribution behind the scenes has been immense, from involvement in association committees and encouraging participation, to helping families and new parents find their place in the sport.

At Drummoyne, Renee is always willing to step in wherever needed. Whether lifting boats on the beach, driving support boats, assisting on the start boat, cooking sausages behind the BBQ, or taking on countless jobs in the background, her commitment to the club never goes unnoticed. More importantly, she brings people together, encourages sailors young and old, and helps foster a welcoming and supportive environment that keeps kids engaged and excited about sailing.

Renee’s passion, generosity and tireless dedication have had a significant impact on the Sabot class, Drummoyne Sailing Club, and junior sailing more broadly around Australia. Thank you, Renee, for everything you continue to do for the sport and our sailing community.
